The Spare turns Weinberger’s attention from abstraction to contemporary portraiture. Depicting Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, the work responds to his memoir Spare with a deliberately satirical edge, incorporating words and phrases associated with the book into the composition. Part of a pair of works examining the British Royal Family, the painting plays with the tension between privilege, publicity and personal grievance. The result is less a conventional portrait than a pointed reflection on the way private identity becomes public narrative.
